I eat on average per day 5 varied portions of Fruit, and lots of different Vegetables especially Onions (Which I could eat raw all day, if not for my wife complaining about my breath… ^_^) would you say I have the right idea? what sort of health benefits can I expect from eating this sort of diet?
Thanks.

Hi, I eat quite a bit of fruit daily and some vegetables, but I’m still not sure if I’m getting enough. I’ve heard we should eat 5 to 6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but does that mean 5 to 6 total of BOTH fruits and vegetables combined in a day or 5 to 6 servings of fruits and then also 5 to 6 servings of vegetables in a day? Also what exactly constitutes 1 serving? For fruit I think I remember reading somewhere that 1 serving = 1 medium peice of fruit. Is that right? I have no idea what 1 serving of veggies would be. I’m not a measurer so I really don’t know if I’m eating enuf or not. Like for example, this morning I sliced in a handful of strawberries into my cereal – I’m not sure if that would actually be considered 1 fruit serving for the day or not. Is there an easy way to make sure I’m getting the daily recommended amount? And like I mentioned in my question, I am currently pregnant so is the 5 to 6 servings a day still the right amount I should be eating?

There is no substitute for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Plants contain phytonutrients that help ward off aging, prevent heart disease and cancer as well as warding off high blood pressure. Also, the fiber in them helps keep people regular. You need bulk in your diet to prevent constipation and prevent conditions such as colon cancer or diverticulosis.
With that being said, a basic multivitamin(a generic Centrum is ok) is a good insurance policy for those that don’t eat alot of fruits and vegetables. Look for vitamins that are USP (U.S. pharmacopoeia) certified for potency. Also, consumerlabs.com is a good resource b/c it is an independent lab that tests supplements. Good luck.

If vitamin tablets give you the same amount of vitamins and mineral, if they give you everything your system needs, what’s the point of eating fruits and vegetables if it makes no difference?
PS. Answers preferably from anyone qualified in the area of nutrition, doctors, nurses etc.
Thank you

I try to be healthy and eat fruit and vegetables, but often I don’t eat any, I feed on fast food, beer and other tripe all day but I don’t feel or look any different – I don’t feel any worse than when I eat healthily. But maybe that is because I am still young. What is the point of eating fruit and veg ?

I am doing a assessment what benefits can you say about vegetables to
Toddlers?
Preschoolers?
School aged children?
