How Do I Get My Parakeets To Start Eating Their Vegetables?
I have 2 baby parakeets. I understand that they won’t eat anything in their cage that they aren’t familiar with. But I also know vegetables are good for them. How do I get them to start eating vegetables? And what kinds?

Not one of my birds of any kind (and I’m a breeder of different kinds of birds) will eat them. So I chop them up really, really small in the chopper and put it in their birdie bread. Every bite they take they get a piece of vegetable or fruit. I used to just cut them into small pieces, but then they would pick them out. So one day I just put them in the chopper a bit longer. They can hardly see them now, but they are getting them. And by the way, the only lettuce a bird should get, and not often, is Romaine. All others are mostly water. If not familiar to birdie bread email me at bettyinphoenix@gmail.com. I make a lot of it, and have some recipes.
fork feed it!
I also had trouble with my parakeets. I put carrots, broccoli, or cauliflower through the bars of their cage so that they would have to find it to eat it. They have to forage for it, which is what birds do in the wild. Sometimes I put it on the bottom of the cage bars, where it won’t get pooped on of course, and they like that too. Stay away from fruits because they have sugars in them. Just try sticking any vegetable that will slide through, but not all the way, and see if they go for it. It was successful for me. Mine also like wheat bread on occasion.
I feed my bird chopped boiled egg, Any dark veggies. not asparaus though. could hurt bird. Even a cooked noodle. carrots. You may need to steam them first. Cool and try leaving in cage with no seed at first of day. They might not take to eating anything if they are older. You can get things such as a vit/minerals at pet store
i had 3 parakeets they wouldnt vegis but dont over feed them so they r spoiled so give them a little bit if corn, peas, carrots lettuce, celery, and alpha is what they like best so give them some of those things and nothing else WHEN YOUR HOME and if they are hungry they will eat it!!then they will have a liking to vegis and eat them!!
Hang them every day,Birds need to be taught to eat their veggies like children, and once the get over their fear ,they will explore what is hanging in and out of their cage, but you must do it all of the time.
Most greens are good.
Start with Lettuce, stick little pieces in their cage and in some toys to stimulate them.
MAke sure it is fresh and not rotten,
Then you could put broccoli, or some apple without seeds.
Here’s a great article from Birds N Ways Winged Wisdom e-zine: HELP! MY BIRD WON’T EAT VEGETABLES! Getting Your Bird Addicted to the Good Stuff by Deena Stevenshttp://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww70eii…
Scrape it under the little hook on their upper beak. They have to eat a tiny bit. If they like it, they will eat more. If they don’t try something else later.
They like fruit. An Apple slice peeled is good. So is a bit of orange. They like a bit of broccoli, some lettuce, some bell pepper, some grated carrot. Don’t give them very much of either. They can get a tummy ache, you can tell by their poop.
You can take their other food out for a little while to see what they will eat. But they need their seed products so don’t take it out for all day!
Give them a firm talking too.
I give my birds large pieces of mustard green or kale that I rinse off first, and then hang in their cages. They nibble on it or take a shower in the dripping water. My LB likes spinach, sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. He won’t eat fruit though, so I make him birdie bread and put fruit juice in it.
