Yahooiga is right. Canned items are already cooked. Part of the canning process is precooking the food before it is sealed up. Otherwise, the process won't work. Let 165 be the magic number in your mind when cooking. All those terrible food poisoning bacteria we hear about that kill thousands of people every year, could be avoided if the cooking temperature had reached 165 degrees first.

NO! They have been cooked when packed to pasteurize.
Canned meat & fish have been pasteurized similarly.
Some things might taste better if cooked & served hot.
But in a salad that isn't necessary,

It was explained to me as a young bride. If you eat uncooked canned veggies that are contaminated with salmonella, the amount on a single green bean could kill you. However if heated, even that will be destroyed. I have always thought it would be better to be safe than sorry!

Considering canned veggies are already cooked, technically no you do not have to. However it is a good idea to, just how your supposed to reheat food to at least 165 degrees.
Here is a recipe, hope this helps.
Vegetable Rice Salad
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups cooked rice
1 cup broccoli florets
1 cup cauliflowerets
3 green onions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons dry ranch salad dressing mix
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 teaspoons sugar
DIRECTIONS
In a bowl, combine rice, broccoli, cauliflower and onions. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; mix well. Stir in rice mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until serving.

No...during the canning process the vegetables are cooked so all you're really doing is warming them up but you don't have to. I like green beans right out of the can (not heated) sometimes.

Part of the canning process involves the contents being heated after the can has been sealed.
Thus you can safely eat the contents without reheating them.
Unless the can has puffed out, then you would try the food out on your mother in law.
